The film is getting a sequel.

The epic antagonists clash in a dramatic confrontation in "Godzilla vs. Kong" with the destiny of the planet hanging in the balance. Kong and his guards go on a risky trip in search of his rightful home, and Jia, a little orphaned girl with whom he has built a profound attachment, joins them. However, they find themselves in the path of an infuriated Godzilla, who is wreaking havoc around the globe. The epic battle between the two titans, which was sparked by invisible powers, is merely the start of the mystery that lurks deep under the Earth's core.

In 2024, five years after Godzilla and Ghidorah fought and killed each other for power, Godzilla and Kong are still the only Titans on Earth. Skull Island's climate has become unstable because of a storm caused by Ghidorah and the storm cell that surrounds the island. Monarch had to keep Kong inside a dome-shaped facility that simulated the island's environment, with an orphaned young Iwi girl named Jia, who is deaf and can communicate with Kong through sign language, as his company.

However, when Jia comes to Kong and gives him a doll, the Titan, realizing that he is inside the biodome, quickly throws a tree at it.

Meanwhile, Bernie Hayes, an employee of the Apex Cybernetics business and presenter of the Titan Truth Podcast, exfiltrates material indicating ominous activity at an Apex facility in Pensacola, but just as he finishes downloading the data, Godzilla appears and strikes unexpectedly. Bernie finds an odd piece of equipment like a huge robotic eye amid the facility's debris during Godzilla's assault.

Following the attack, the general public was taken aback by Godzilla's abilities to defend humanity, and they turned against him. Madison Russell, an adult listener to Bernie's podcast, is terrified about the newest Godzilla attack on her school, which took place last week. Her efforts to argue with her widowed father Mark (who also serves as Monarch's director) concerning the origins of Godzilla's rampage are met with dismissive silence, with Mark just stating that creatures may change in the same way as people can. Madison enlists the assistance of her best friend, Josh Valentine, in order to unravel the secrets surrounding Apex and the guy responsible for Godzilla's rampage.

Meanwhile, Apex's founder and CEO Walter Simmons engages Nathan Lind, a former Monarch scientist turned Hollow Earth theorist, to assist them in their quest for a tremendous energy source in the Hollow Earth, a subterranean planet under the Earth and the secret home of the Titans. Nathan is first cautious since his brother attempted to investigate the Hollow Earth and was killed by a powerful anti-gravity field within the tube. He ultimately accepts when Walter unveils Apex's development of Hollow Earth Aerial Vehicles, customized ship capable of withstanding the gravity field's pressure.

In order to go to the energy source, Nathan advises using Kong as a guide since Skull Island can no longer contain him (because Kong has grown too large). In the end, Nathan is able to convince Ilene to help stop Godzilla's rampage and find a new home for Kong.

By now, Godzilla has arrived and attacked the soldiers, before causing the barge to capsize and almost drowning Kong as well as the others on board. When Nathan frees Kong by unlocking his shackles, enabling him to combat Godzilla underwater long enough for him to surface and tip the barge back on its head, he saves the party from drowning. Godzilla goes onboard a neighboring aircraft ship to fight Kong, who has jumped onto it. Fighter planes divert Godzilla long enough for Kong to drive him back into the water, where the two Titans trade blows until the latter is forced to retreat. This time around, Godzilla doesn't let Kong get away by firing his atomic breath from the carrier, but instead takes him down into the water and intends on drowning him.

However, since Godzilla is shocked by deep charges, Kong is able to surface for air, thereby ending the conflict.

Nathan has no option except to stop the ships' power in order to trick Godzilla into thinking that he has destroyed them and Kong has been defeated. After inspecting the stricken ship, he decides to swim away, content with his win. The team chooses to fly Kong to an Antarctica opening to the Hollow Earth, where Godzilla was first frozen, as they prepare to reactivate the ships. It seems that Kong is unwilling to cross the threshold, despite Jia's insistence.

Realizing Kong cannot survive in the cold weather and that they cannot return him to Skull Island, Nathan asks Ilene if Kong will go if he believes there are others like him through there, and she tells Jia to ask Kong that his family may be down there, prompting the Titan to enter the tunnel and the teams to follow him in their HEAVs.

There, the three disembark and discover Apex's ultimate weapon, "Mechagodzilla" a mechanical version of Godzilla operated by the late Dr. Ishiro Serizawa's son and Walter's top technological officer Ren Serizawa. Walter immediately releases a gigantic adult Skullcrawler nicknamed "Number 10" into the chamber to test Mechagodzilla's strength against the Titans once the mecha is activated. The beast is on the point of attacking Madison, Josh, and Bernie when it is captured and imprisoned by Mechagodzilla. Using a strong red energy beam, Mechagodzilla cleaves the Skullcrawler in two, enabling Madison, Josh, and Bernie to take refuge in a tiny hatch. The test is, however, cut short as the mecha quickly turns down owing to power supply limits.

Walter then reveals his plan to capture the Hollow Earth's energy in order to overcome Mechagodzilla's limits. Madison then understands that Mechagodzilla is the reason Godzilla attacked in the first place: Apex is attempting to usurp him and all the Titans in order for humans to become Earth's apex species. While searching for an exit, Madison and the others come across a room where Ren is seated inside Ghidorah's severed head, which has been transformed into a biological supercomputer and cockpit for Ren to control Mechagodzilla via radio waves. Apex acquired the head from Alan Jonah after it was bitten off by Godzilla five years ago during his battle with Ghidorah.

Kong and Nathan's crew discover an ecology that is identical to that of Skull Island within the Hollow Earth. They are assaulted by a pair of Warbats while traversing the countryside, with one of the Warbats destroying one of the HEAVs in the process. Kong was able to rescue the party by killing the first Warbat and swinging its carcass onto the second Warbat, knocking it out cold. However, the beast recovers and constricts itself around Kong, saving him from certain death. In order for the Warbat to suffocate Kong, the creature is hit by missiles fired by Nathan's squad from their HEAV, allowing Kong to break free and savagely thrash the monster to death before feeding on the Warbat's corpse by consuming its intestines.

Kong and Nathan's squad set off on their journey after discovering a majestic stone temple that belonged to Kong's ancestors. As they make their way inside the building, they come across remains of a previous fight between Kong and Godzilla's species, and Kong finds an ancient axe made from the dorsal plate of a deceased member of Godzilla's race. It is possible that this power source will also recharge Kong's axe. Maia and the Apex team use spider-like drones to retrieve the power source and transport it back to their Hong Kong headquarters, despite Ilene's concerns that Apex cannot just take possession of the find of the century on their own terms. When Maia's guards open fire on Nathan's team, Kong cries furiously in response. When Godzilla discovers that Mechagodzilla has been activated, he immediately heads for Hong Kong.

When Godzilla makes his way into the city center and senses that Kong is lurking in the Hollow Earth, he uses his atomic breath to dig a hole through the environment, causing a temple to fall down. Despite the fact that Kong and Nathan's team are fighting off a horde of Hellhawks and Maia and her team are attempting to escape in their HEAV, Kong manage to grab the aircraft and crush it in his hand after peeking inside to make sure Jia, Ilene, and Nathan are not inside, killing Maia and her team.

Hearing Godzilla's roar as he issues him with another challenge, Kong accepts and proceeds to make his way through the hole created by Godzilla's atomic breath to Hong Kong with his axe in hand while Ilene, Nathan and Jia follow him in their HEAV. Upon arriving in Hong Kong and confronting Godzilla, Kong fights him again, this time gaining the upper hand against the Titan to the point he shoves his axe down Godzilla's throat to stop him firing his atomic breath. Kong sees that his axe can not only block Godzilla's atomic breath, but can also absorb the blast and injures the Titan in the thigh with his weapon, though Godzilla removes the axe and throws it away. After using the buildings of Hong Kong and his superior agility to dodge and evade Godzilla's attacks, Kong retrieves his axe before bringing his now charged-up weapon down on Godzilla, creating an explosion that knocks both Titans back, making Nathan believe that Kong has won the second round.

Kong and Godzilla both recover and get back to their feet, with Godzilla searching for Kong, who hides from the Titan by perching himself on a skyscraper. Kong throws a construction crane into a building, distracting Godzilla to the point he ambushes him from above and places the Titan in a chokehold intending to strangle him, only for Godzilla to break free and unleash his full fury against Kong, eventually dislocating his left arm, slashing Kong with his claws and even stomping on his chest twice, despite Kong trying to force Godzilla off of him by punching his wounded thigh. With Kong subdued and pinned down, Godzilla furiously roars at his opponent in a show of dominance, but Kong, defeated, angrily roars in defiance against Godzilla.

After waking up, Kong sees the fight between Godzilla and Mechagodzilla before encountering Jia, who attempts to persuade Kong that Godzilla isn't truly his foe. Though Kong does not believe her at first as he continues to witness Godzilla being annihilated by Mechagodzilla, Jia eventually discloses the truth to him, revealing that the robot, not Godzilla, is the "real" adversary. Kong agrees and sets aside his resentment after a brief moment of reflection before marching into combat to assist Godzilla and repair his dislocated limb.

The two Titans team together to change the tide, but the robot outclasses them. Axe in hand, Kong takes aim at Mechagodzilla, but his weapon has lost its charge, and the robot tries to impale Kong with its tail drill, but Kong survives. Bernie, recognizing he and the others can do nothing for Kong and Godzilla, takes out a flask of booze and suggests they all drink. But Josh, having an epiphany, steals Bernie's flask and pours the contents all over Mechagodzilla's control panel, causing Mechagodzilla to stop and allowing Godzilla and Kong to retake the upper hand.

When Madison reunites with Mark and introduces him to Josh and Bernie in the aftermath, Mark is overjoyed and asks him into his show to discuss the Monarch facility in Roswell. Godzilla appears and interrupts the moment, causing Kong to fetch his axe and prepare for a resumption of the battle. Instead of attacking, Godzilla just stands there and looks Kong in the eye. At last, the long-running animosity between Kong's race and Godzilla's is laid to rest as they both acknowledge their actual foe has been slain. Godzilla and Kong treat each other as equals before Godzilla returns to the ocean quietly as Kong and the rest of the assembled humanity watch.
